We want to showcase a personal journey from designer to type entrepreneur, along with numerous type projects created by our user community, which highlights a range of creative interpretations of what typography can be. Social injustice is something we don’t always know how to fight against as creatives. So at Fontself we have modestly tried to contribute by supporting typographic initiatives that empower great causes and great people from all origins. I am a cofounder at Fontself and I grew up in Africa, which opened my eyes to the beauty of our multicultural world and the need to empower all that diversity. When I launched a simple tool to bring font creation to Adobe Illustrator, I intended to lower the bar for any creative to start enjoying this wonderful medium, so we could witness a new wave of original, personal, expressive and socially diverse / impactful fonts. When we got invited by a team at Ogilvy, NY to work on a tribute font to the rainbow flag designer, we felt honored to be part of it. When we got the opportunity to talk about compelling new type designers, we have been thrilled to showcase super talented folks from different origins, genres or geographies. On our quest to democratize font creation - which we call Typocracy ;) - we are now looking to educate further our global audience of type nuts with insights about the process of designing and creating typefaces in a tool that many creatives are most familiar with, right within Illustrator.
